Liturgical Ministry

When the faithful of our community gather, we become a visible sign of the Body of Christ. Some people serve as liturgical ministers to help facilitate the assemblies during the liturgies. Their ministry touches all who come to worship at our parish and assists the faith community in its public communal prayer as we join the endless prayer of thanksgiving in union with the whole Church.
There are a variety of ministries for the laity including Ministers of Music, Hospitality, Lectors, Altar Servers, Arts and Environment, and Eucharistic Ministers of Holy Communion. All lay ministers must be compliant with the diocesan Ethics & Integrity in Ministry program.

Altar Servers
Altar Servers assist the presider at the altar and throughout the Liturgy. This ministry is open to males and females, beginning in the third grade-second semester, after reception of the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Parents of altar servers must be EIM certified.* Altar Servers are trained at the beginning of each semester.

LectorsLectors proclaim of the Word of God of Masses and other special celebrations. Lectors are trained in the fall.

Eucharistic Ministers
Eucharistic Ministers assist the presider and deacon with the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ. To become a Eucharistic Minister, one must complete a training that includes the theological background of this ministry, as well as the practical aspects of assisting in sharing of communion Training is offered in the fall.

Hospitality Ministers
Ministers of Hospitality (commonly known as Ushers or Greeters) provide a sense of hospitality and welcome to all worshippers. Hospitality Ministers are always needed and are trained throughout the year.

Art & Environment
Those involved in Art and Environment help create, design and implement decor for the worship space that will enhance our worship. For Christmas and Easter, parish members and families are invited to help decorate the church.

Communion Outreach

Since the earliest days of Christianity, ministers took the Eucharist to those members of the community who were not able to attend church because they were sick or homebound. At St. Austin's we continuesthis nearly 2,000-year-old tradition by visiting three hospitals, two nursing homes, and a few homebound parishioners.
In addition to a devotion to the Eucharist, this ministry requires a caring and prayerful spirit with ability to listen and relate to others. Each Communion Outreach minister visits the same hospital or nursing home one weekend each month. Each institution we visit has a different "feel" to it. We can help match your gifts and interests to our community's greatest needs.
Out of an abundance of concern for the medically vulnerable people we visit, most of our Communion Outreach ministry has been suspended during this time of the COVID-19. (The priests and deacons still visit people in emergency cases.) However, we currently have a need for new ministers to call residents at Westminster Nursing Home. Ideally, anyone who signs up for this phone-call ministry would agree to continue on as a Communion Outreach minister at Westminster once it is safe for us to visit the residents again.
If you have a desire to be involved with this rewarding ministry, please contact Fr. Paolo Puccini. Training takes place each fall and spring. It consists of one organizational/theological meeting, followed by several on-site mentoring sessions with an experienced lay minister.
