“I am with you always” (Mt 28:20): this is the promise the Lord made to his disciples before he ascended into heaven. They are the words that he repeats to you today, dear grandfathers and grandmothers, dear elderly friends. “I am with you always” are also the words that I, as Bishop of Rome and an elderly person like yourselves, would like to address to you on this first World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly. The whole Church is close to you – to us – and cares about you, loves you and does not want to leave you alone!
We invite you to spend time with the full text of the Holy Father's Message for
I thank You, Lord, for the comfort of Your presence: even in times of loneliness, You are my hope and my confidence, You have been my rock and my fortress since my youth!
I thank You for having given me a family and for having blessed me with a long life. I thank You for moments of joy and difficulty, for the dreams that have already come true in my life and for those that are still ahead of me. I thank You for this time of renewed fruitfulness to which You call me.
Increase, O Lord, my faith, make me a channel of your peace, teach me to embrace those who suffer more than me, to never stop dreaming and to tell of your wonders to new generations.
Protect and guide Pope Francis and the Church, that the light of the Gospel might reach the ends of the earth. Send Your Spirit, O Lord, to renew the world, that the storm of the pandemic might be calmed, the poor consoled and wars ended.
Sustain me in weakness and help me to live life to the full in each moment that You give me, in the certainty that you are with me every day, even until the end of the age. Amen.

The Blessings of Age
A Pastoral Message on Growing Older
Recognizing the social, economic, and spiritual implications of this rapidly growing age group, the bishops encourage a fresh perspective that embraces the gift of aging. Special words are offered for (1) older people themselves, (2) caregivers, (3) the parish faith community--pastors, staff, volunteers, and all parishioners, and (4) younger adults.
The publication also includes reflection and discussion questions, current statistics, and helpful suggestions. It was released in commemoration of the United Nations' "International Year of Older Persons."

Read & Share What You See in the News
In our March 28th edition of JUSTNews we shared the story of a woman helped by our St. Vincent de Paul Society. She'd fallen prey to a scam to improve her credit score.
In the news at this writing (April 8, 2021) is the story of seniors who fell victim to a scam by persons posing as tech support, for example, Best Buy's "GeekSquad". Originally published in the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the article observes that "Business imposter fraud topped the Federal Trade Commission Consumer Sentinel Network’s tally of types of fraud against consumers ages 60 to 69 and 70 to 79 for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2020, knocking government imposters from the top spot."

Through our ministries to those in need and from losses sustained by some within our parish community, we've learned of several scams that prey on the elderly and other vulnerable people. We've heard heartbreaking stories! After running awareness articles, a member of our community brought us an opportunity to do more!
St. Austin's hosted two virtual investor education and fraud awareness presentations. Officials from the Securities & Exchange Commission's Ft. Worth Regional Office, Barbara Gunn and Drew Zimmerman, shared information and resources increasing our awareness of how to avoid falling prey to schemes targeting seniors and other vulnerable populations. Knowing that seniors are often the target of fraud and some basic understanding of how scam artists work, empowers us to take action to protect elders in our circle of care. The presenters advised that "Ask Questions" is the best advice for wise investment. We learned that many investors who might have avoided trouble and losses if they had asked basic questions from the start.
