The Prayer Blanket Ministry sews lap-size blankets for those experiencing difficult times. Prayers are offered for recipients as the blankets are constructed. Over 1,000 blankets have been given to those in need of them.
The blankets are blessed at the 8 a.m. Mass on the 2nd Monday of each month. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is also offered. The ministry requires the ability to use a sewing machine, prepare fabric or add finishing touches to the blankets and a commitment to pray for the recipients. Work sessions are on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month from 1:30 pm until 3:30 pm at the parish. Instruction on blanket construction is given. Volunteers may also work at home.
The Prayer Blanket Ministry was introduced to St. Austin Parish by a member who received a blanket while recovering from surgery and treatment. She experienced peace and joy from the gift and the prayers of the faith community. She kept the prayer blanket on her hospital bed and continues to use it at home today.
